The Department of Curriculum and Instruction for Avery County Schools focuses on the basic learning skills: reading, writing, and mathematics.

Major initiatives supporting these skills include:

  • Aligning, pacing, and assessing instruction with The North Carolina Standard Course of Study
  • Providing timely, effective instructional interventions or "safety nets" for students who are not achieving  expected academic growth.
  • Implementing student accountability to ensure that students are performing on or above grade level before promotion to the next grade.

In the past three years, these initiatives have reduced by half the number of students not functioning on grade level in reading, writing, and mathematics. Currently eighty-seven percent of Avery County students perform at or above grade level. Although emphasis on traditional basics continues, the use of technology by teachers and students is now also considered basic.  Teachers are receiving training to develop lesson plans using a web based format. In addition, students regularly receive instruction in the arts, physical education, personal health and safety, media and computer skills, science, social studies, second languages, and vocational/technical education as directed in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
