About the Department

The Business and Financial Services Department is responsible for the financial functions and reporting for the Avery County Schools System. This department plays a vital role in efficiently and effectively funding the education initiatives developed by the Federal Government, the North Carolina State Board of Education, and the Avery County Schools Board of Education. Business and Financial Services aims to provide efficient and effective business and financial services that support the educational goals of Avery County School System to the teachers, staff, and community.
 
We are responsible for budget preparation and revision; processing of purchase orders and payment of invoices; payroll processing and reporting, including vendor payment of payroll deductions and tax deposits; cash receipts; investment of funds; fixed assets; reporting and compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations; management of employee and student insurance programs; providing child nutrition services, monitoring funds of individual schools; and training of school accounting personnel.

Financial Rules and Guidelines

Anytime an expenditure of funds is to be transacted the appropriate paperwork must be completed, signed and filed with the Finance Department for ACS. ACS has four primary ways in which to initiate the expenditure of funds, requisitions and purchase orders; voucher requests; travel reimbursement and mileage reimbursement. Each are identified and explained in this document.

Student Insurance

Student School Day & Athlete Insurance Information Packet

Avery County Schools provides a LIMITED BENEFIT SECONDARY POLICY for all students grades PreK through 12. This plan is a supplemental policy and must be used as secondary coverage in the event your child is injured during normal school hours while at school or attending a school function. This packet contains all the information you need to file a claim.

Additional coverage may be purchased at the PARENTS COST. See the Voluntary Enrollment information below.
