  • Teaching as a Profession I

    • Semester: Fall

      Teaching as a Profession is a series of courses that introduce students to the field of education. Intended for high school students who are interested in becoming teachers and are thinking about majoring in education in college, the courses explore various aspects of the teaching profession. Students will study the history, roles and responsibilities of teachers and learn about current challenges and trends in education.

      In course 1, Teaching as a Profession students study, apply, and practice the use of current technologies, effective teaching and learning strategies, the creation of an effective learning environment, the creation of instructional opportunities for diverse learners and students with special needs.

  • Teaching as a Profession II

    • Semester: Spring

    • Instructor: Barrier

      In course 2, students will investigate issues influencing the social and political contexts of educational settings in North Carolina and the United States and actively examine the teaching profession from multiple vantage points both within and outside of the school. Students will reflect on and interpret the meaning of education and schooling in a diverse culture and examine the moral and ethical responsibilities of teaching.

  • Teaching as a Profession Field Experience

    • Semester: Spring

    • Instructor: Barrier

      To complete the pathway, students will take part in an internship where they will gain hands-on experience in a classroom setting. Completion of the pathway helps students prepare for the rigors of a college education in an education field and provides a comprehensive overview of the teaching profession, including its challenges and rewards. Successful completion of the three Education and Training courses and the End-of-Pathway Assessment allows students the opportunity to earn articulated credit for college toward their degree in Education.
