Dear Avery County Schools Students & Staff,
As another school year draws to a close, it is a bittersweet moment to see everyone depart for the summer break. With deep gratitude and sincere appreciation, I offer a heartfelt THANK YOU to each one of you for your unwavering dedication and hard work this year.
To the incredible staff, your commitment to nurturing and inspiring our students day in and day out has made a lasting impact on our young people this year. Your dedication is truly commendable, and I am very grateful for all that you have done since last August to improve the lives of our students.
To our remarkable students, you are the reason we do the work we do each day. Your enthusiasm and willingness to embrace new challenges are an inspiration for all of us. We are very proud of each one of you for your achievements this year and I am confident that you will continue to grow academically and experience continued success.
Preparations are already underway for the return of all staff and students in August. The summer months will be busy as we ensure our schools and classrooms are prepared to provide the best teaching and learning environment for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Congratulations to the Class of 2023!
The 2022-2023 school year has quickly come to an end and all students will be
departing Thursday (June 1st) for the short summer break. Friday evening, we will
proudly recognize the graduating Class of 2023 in the 55th Graduation Exercises at
Avery County High School. Approximately 135 graduates from Avery High will be
awarded their high school diplomas. Congratulations to each graduate as you conclude
your K-12 (Kindergarten-Grade 12) journey and begin the next chapter in life.
As we enter the summer break, we lift each graduate, all students, their families and our
entire school system up in prayer. May God continue to watch over and protect each of
you and our great school system.

Avery County Resident Appreciation Month at the Alpine Coaster!

Thanks to our industry partners and Mayland Community College for helping make the ACHS Career Fair an incredible success. LOTS of opportunities for students during the summer and beyond!

Please help us to spread the word. This is a different day of the month for Community Market. Thursday, April 6th due to the Easter Break holiday. We are also always in need of volunteers if you are able to help, please come to the Old Rock School gym to help pack boxes at 9:45AM on April 6th, 2023.

The Avery County School system will operate on a 2 HR DELAY delay with no buses on gravel roads for Wednesday, March 15, 2023. The national weather service has issued warnings pertaining to slick roads in Avery County overnight and the likelihood of refreezing creating dangerous travel conditions in the AM.
Any changes to tomorrow’s plan will be announced as soon as possible.
Due to impending snow in the forecast, temperatures remaining below freezing, and flurries now occurring throughout the county, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED with an OPTIONAL TEACHER WORKDAY today, Tuesday, March 14, 2023.

The Avery County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly board meeting on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. A work session will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the regular meeting beginning at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at 775 Cranberry Street in Newland at the Avery County Central Services office.
Good afternoon parents, and guardians,
As you may be aware, more snow and freezing temperatures are forecast for tomorrow morning. Snow is expected to begin between 6 AM and 7 AM and lasting until mid-morning.
Therefore, the Avery County School System will be on a two hour delay for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 14, 2023. We will continue to watch this weather front in the morning and any additional changes to our schedule will be announced by 7:30 AM.

Good afternoon. Due to the current weather forecast calling for snow in the early morning hours tomorrow with temperatures below freezing, the Avery County School System will operate on a TWO HOUR DELAY on Monday, March 13, 2023. We will continue to monitor conditions overnight and if a school closure is required, this announcement will be made by 7:00 AM tomorrow morning. Stay warm and safe!

Reminder to share with your friends and family who are in need of food. Community Market will be Thursday, March 9th, 2023 at the Old Rock School Gym. Free produce, shelf stable goods and more. Volunteers are needed if you are available to help pack boxes for distribution. Packing boxes with volunteers will begin at 9:45.

Are you interested in substitute teaching for Avery County Schools? If so please notify Michelle Whitley (michellewhitley@averyschools.net) to be added to our list. The last training for this school year will be on March 28th at our Central Office from 9AM to 12PM. Interested candidates will have to attend the training, complete the employment packet (given at training), and have School Board approval in order to work in our schools. We look forward to hearing from you.
The Avery County Board of Education will be reviewing the district's Internet Safety policy during the next board meeting on March 14 at 6:00pm. The meeting will be held at 775 Cranberry Street- Newland, NC-28657. Chief Information Officer - David Reep will be presenting on the Internet Safety measures that are currently in place to protect our students. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. Any person wishing to address the board on Internet Safety, or any other topic, should email hannaharnett@averyschools.net to be added to the agenda.
