Thank you to the Avery County Sheriff's Office and Deputy Casey Lee for spending the day with our 7th graders on Friday to talk about drug awareness and law enforcement careers. We also want to thank Deputy Ridge Phillips, Deputy Tim Austin and our own School Resource Officer Larry Moore. The students really enjoyed the day especially watching Canine Deputy Kilo at work!

Announcements March 27-31, 2023 Attention parents of 8th graders going on the Charleston trip: There will be a parent meeting for all students who are going on the trip next Monday April 3rd beginning at 4:00 p.m. Kenny Ward from Ward Tours will be in attendance. The total cost of the trip is $450.00 and all payments are due no later than next Thursday, April 6th. Avery Middle School’s Jr Beta Club Induction Ceremony will be held Friday, March 31st at First Baptist Church of Newland beginning at 6:00. Rocking our crazy socks in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day!

We were so lucky to have Michael Berkowicz and his wife, Bonnie Berkowicz, with us today. This husband-wife team of designers have made sculptures and pieces all over the world dedicated to Jewish history and remembering what we must never forget -- the Holocaust. Some of their works include "Executive Dreidel," kept in the Jewish Museum in NY, and "In the Shadow of Their Absence," a Holocaust monument in Puerto Rico. Bonnie and Michael currently reside in the mountains of North Carolina and are members of Temple of the High Country, the Jewish congregation in Boone. Here at Avery Middle, 8th graders have been learning about Jewish history and the unfortunate events of the Holocaust. Michael, thank you for being here with us today to share some of your experiences with us. We appreciate you!

Congratulations to the Avery Middle Science Olympiad team on an amazing job at their recent competition. A reminder that the 3rd grading period ends next week on March 15th and next Thursday, March 16th is a staff workday so no school for students and spring picture day is March 20th. Attention Track Participants: Final forms and physicals are due before March 7th. Practices will begin on March 7th. Practices will last until 4:30 at the high school. Three will be no practice on Thursday, March 9th and Friday, March 10th.

Avery Middle will dismiss at 11:45 a.m. Our baseball and softball teams play at home tomorrow against Cane River beginning at 4:00. The baseball team will play on the Rec League field at the Rock Gym in Newland and the softball team will play at the softball field on the AMS campus. On Wednesday our girl’s soccer team will play at Madison beginning at 4:00. On Thursday our baseball and softball teams will play at Harris beginning at 4:00. Here are a few dates to add to your calendar: March 15th will mark the end of the 3rd grading period. Please check your students’ grades and make sure your student turns in all assignments. Congratulations to our Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest Winners: 3rd Place: Dallas Large 2nd Place: Lexi Hughes 1st Place: Kennedi Callahan Congratulations to our Avery Middle School Teacher of the Year: Mr. Chad Rogers! Thank you, Mr. Rogers, for all you do for your students and our school. On Tuesday, our 8th grade students will tour Avery High School. Please make sure your student brings in their permission slip tomorrow. On Wednesday, the 8th graders are scheduled to go to Sugar Mountain. A decision on whether to go on Wednesday or to postpone the trip until March 1st will be made tomorrow. Payment must be made by tomorrow, February 20th. On Thursday, our baseball team and softball teams will play their season-opening games against East Yancey beginning at 4:00. The baseball team will play on the Rec League field in Newland and the softball team will play at the softball field on the AMS campus. Have a great evening!

Congratulations to our Lady Panthers on an amazing season! The Lady Panthers finished the basketball season as conference regular season champions (17-0) and conference tournament champions!

The Avery County School System will operate on a 2 hour delay tomorrow, Friday January 27, 2023. Conditions will be monitored overnight and any needed changes will be announced by 7:00a.m.
