Congratulations to Gracie Surrett on winning the district-wide spelling bee! Gracie will compete in the regional spelling bee at Bank of America Stadium.
Congratulations also to Madison Franklin, Allie Thompson and Amelia Wanner on advancing to the next round of the Amazing Shake! They will compete again on February 22nd.

Weekly Announcements February 5-9
This week is School Counselor’s week. Thank you, Mrs. Powell, for all you do for our students, families and school!
Baseball tryouts will be tomorrow beginning at 3:15 at the Rec. League field. Students must have a current physical on file and be signed up on Final Forms in order to try out.
Eighth graders will travel to Sugar Mountain on Wednesday for the field trip that they missed last week.
Students who qualified will participate in Round 2 of the Amazing Shake on Thursday at the Ag. Center. Please make sure your permission slip has been returned by Tuesday.
There will be a Parent Meeting for all girls who are interested in trying out for soccer. The meeting will take place in the AMS Media Center at 5:30 on Thursday. Tryouts will begin on Monday, February 12th.
There will be an after-school social this Friday, February 9th in the gym. The dance will begin at 3 p.m. and end at 5 p.m. Parents will need to pick up their students no later than 5:15 in the lower parking lot. The cost is $5.00 and a signed permission slip must be returned to school on the day of the event. Please note, permission by phone will not be accepted. Permission slips were passed out last week. Concessions will also be sold during the dance.

8th grade field trip to Sugar Mountain on Wednesday. Permission slips and money must be turned in by the end of 4th block on Tuesday.
The Avery Middle School Junior Beta Club would like to invite all AMS students and families to their annual Beta Club Induction Ceremony. The ceremony will be held at First Baptist Church in Newland on Friday, February 2nd. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m.
We will be having an after-school social on Friday, February 9th in the gym. The dance will begin at 3 p.m. and end at 5 p.m. Parents will need to pick up their students no later than 5:15 in the lower parking lot. There will be no school for students and staff on Monday, January 15 in recognition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
Our basketball tournament will continue this week with our boy’s team playing at Bowman Middle School on Monday.
We will conduct a lockdown drill on Thursday, January 18th. Please encourage your students to take this drill very seriously and to remain quiet and still during the entire drill.

Due to very dangerous icy conditions this morning and temperatures well below freezing, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED with an OPTIONAL TEACHER WORKDAY today, Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Faculty and staff who can safely travel may report at 12:00NOON to allow contractors access to vacant parking lots and sidewalks during daylight hours.

If conditions worsen overnight, a decision regarding school closure will be made by 6:00am.
