Statement from the Board of Education Chair

To the Staff, Parents, and Community of Avery County Schools,

Over the past several months, the Avery County Board of Education has been engaged in discussions regarding potential middle school consolidation and elementary school reorganization. These conversations have been part of our ongoing effort to ensure that we are making thoughtful, responsible decisions that best serve the students of Avery County both now and in the future.

After careful consideration, the Board believes it is important that these discussions include the voices and perspectives of the full Board that will be serving our district moving forward, as well as all stakeholders including staff, parents, and community members.  Therefore, the Avery County Board of Education voted to table any further discussion or action regarding middle school consolidation and elementary school reorganization until the July Board of Education meeting, when newly elected board members will have taken office.

We recognize that these topics are important to our staff, families, and community members. By allowing the incoming board members to participate in these conversations from the beginning, we believe it will help ensure a thoughtful, transparent process that reflects the perspectives of the entire Board.

In the meantime, our focus remains on supporting our students, staff, and schools as we continue providing the best possible educational opportunities for every child in Avery County.

Thank you for your continued support of Avery County Schools.

Sincerely,

Pat Edwards

Chair, Avery County Board of Education
