The Avery County Board of Education recently recognized the winners of the Amazing SHAKE competition, including both regional competitors and school-level winners. Congratulations to all of the Amazing SHAKE winners—your accomplishments make Avery County proud!
The Amazing SHAKE is a competition for students in grades 4–8 that teaches critical professional skills, etiquette, and "soft skills" to prepare them for the real world. Students learn to build confidence, poise, and effective communication through techniques like firm handshakes, proper eye contact, and engaging conversation skills.
Key skills taught include:
Professionalism & Etiquette: Manners, respect, and proper conduct in both business and social situations.
Communication: Confident conversation, public speaking, and the ability to “work a room.”
Adaptability: Thinking on their feet during challenges like “the gauntlet” or impromptu speaking.
Networking: Meeting community leaders and building meaningful relationships.
The competition culminates in real-world scenarios such as mock interviews, delivering speeches, and handling high-pressure situations, helping students develop poise, confidence, and readiness for the future.
