Welcome Dr. Murray!

The Avery County Board of Education is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Murray has been selected to serve as Interim Superintendent of Avery County Schools.

Dr. Murray brings a tremendous wealth of experience to guide the public schools of Avery County while the Board conducts its search for a permanent Superintendent. He previously served as Superintendent of Schools for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from 2017 to 2023 and as Superintendent of Jackson County Public Schools from 2011 to 2017. In addition, he has served as Associate Superintendent in McDowell County Schools and as a school principal in Buncombe County. Dr. Murray began his career in education as a science teacher in Buncombe County in 1984.

“Dr. Murray is the perfect person to lead our schools while the School Board focuses on the selection process for a new Superintendent,” said Board Chair Pat Edwards. “He understands public education and knows how to lead. We are very fortunate.”

Dr. Murray shared his enthusiasm for joining Avery County Schools, stating, “I have dedicated my professional career to western North Carolina, and public education is my passion. I look forward to working with the students, parents, professional educators, and the community in Avery County to continue the great work being done in the schools.”

Dr. Murray will begin his work immediately, focusing on visiting schools and connecting with staff as he steps into this important leadership role. Avery County Schools looks forward to his guidance, experience, and commitment to student success during this transition.
