We will continue to monitor conditions overnight and reassess in the early morning hours. Any changes for tomorrow, including the need for a school cancellation, will be announced no later than 6:30 AM.

Good afternoon! Due to the significant amount of snowfall and travel conditions remaining very dangerous in many parts of the county, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 with an OPTIONAL TEACHER WORKDAY. Faculty and staff should use the highest level of caution if attempting to come to work tomorrow. Tonight’s low for Newland will be 2 degrees, resulting in refreeze and very dangerous driving conditions throughout the county. Due to continued snowfall in the forecast overnight and dangerous travel conditions anticipated over the next 24 hours, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED for all students, faculty and staff on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Avery County Schools will operate on a REGULAR SCHEDULE tomorrow, Friday, January 12th. Buses will not travel on the following gravel roads: Berry Rd, Arnett Rd, Reuben Wooten Rd, Dogwood Knob Rd, Old Beech Mountain Rd, John Greer Rd, Chestnut Dale Rd, and White Pine Rd. There will likely be spots of black ice in the morning where water continues to run across the roadways. Please use extreme caution traveling in the early morning hours.

Avery County Schools will be on a 2 Hour Delay, Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9th due to the multiple inclement weather warnings of ice, high wind, and flooding. A 2hr delay allows our buses and student drivers to travel after daylight in order to see possible issues better. Roads will be checked in the morning and a decision made before 630 if necessary.
