Good afternoon! Due to the impending winter weather for our area overnight, the Avery County School System will operate on a two hour delay on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. We will continue to monitor conditions overnight and reassess in the early morning hours. Any changes for tomorrow, including the need for a school cancellation, will be announced no later than 6:30 AM.

Good evening! Due to current forecasts calling for snow and freezing temperatures overnight tonight, the Avery County School System will operate on a TWO HOUR DELAY on Monday, January 29, 2024. We will assess conditions in the early morning hours and announce any necessary changes to tomorrow’s schedule by 6:30AM.

Due to numerous roads throughout the county that remain snow-covered or icy, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 with an optional workday for all faculty and staff. Faculty and staff may report at 9:00 AM. Please use extreme caution when traveling throughout the county.

Good afternoon! Due to snow-covered roads throughout the county and the likelihood of refreeze overnight, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED with an OPTIONAL WORKDAY on Monday, January 22, 2024. Faculty and staff may report at 10:00 AM. Stay safe!

Due to current weather forecasts calling for additional snow overnight tonight and all day tomorrow, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED with an OPTIONAL WORKDAY on Friday, January 19, 2024. Faculty and staff may report at 10 AM.

Due to current conditions and numerous ice-covered roads throughout a large part of the county, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED with an OPTIONAL WORKDAY on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Good afternoon! Due to the significant amount of snowfall and travel conditions remaining very dangerous in many parts of the county, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 with an OPTIONAL TEACHER WORKDAY. Faculty and staff should use the highest level of caution if attempting to come to work tomorrow. Tonight’s low for Newland will be 2 degrees, resulting in refreeze and very dangerous driving conditions throughout the county. Faculty and staff may report at 12:00NOON to allow additional time for parking lots to be addressed and sidewalks cleared. Have a good night, stay warm, and stay safe.

Due to continued snowfall in the forecast overnight and dangerous travel conditions anticipated over the next 24 hours, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED for all students, faculty and staff on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Have a good evening and please stay safe.

Avery County Schools will operate on a REGULAR SCHEDULE tomorrow, Friday, January 12th. Buses will not travel on the following gravel roads: Berry Rd, Arnett Rd, Reuben Wooten Rd, Dogwood Knob Rd, Old Beech Mountain Rd, John Greer Rd, Chestnut Dale Rd, and White Pine Rd. There will likely be spots of black ice in the morning where water continues to run across the roadways. Please use extreme caution traveling in the early morning hours.

Due to multiple secondary roads remaining a concern, the possibility of black ice from runoff re-freeze overnight tonight and the need for daylight hours for safe travel, the Avery County School System will operate on a TWO-HOUR DELAY tomorrow, Thursday, January 11, 2024. Due to very dangerous icy conditions this morning and temperatures well below freezing, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED with an OPTIONAL TEACHER WORKDAY today, Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Faculty and staff who can safely travel may report at 12:00NOON to allow contractors access to vacant parking lots and sidewalks during daylight hours. Please stay safe!

Due to current forecasts calling for additional snow overnight and temperatures dropping well below freezing, the Avery County School System will operate on a TWO-HOUR DELAY tomorrow, Wednesday, January 10, 2024. If conditions worsen overnight, a decision regarding school closure will be made by 6:00am.

Due to very dangerous icy conditions this morning and temperatures remaining at freezing, the Avery County School System will be CLOSED with an OPTIONAL TEACHER WORKDAY today, Tuesday January 9, 2024. If conditions improve, faculty and staff may report at 10:00am.

Avery County Schools will be on a 2 Hour Delay, Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9th due to the multiple inclement weather warnings of ice, high wind, and flooding. A 2hr delay allows our buses and student drivers to travel after daylight in order to see possible issues better. Roads will be checked in the morning and a decision made before 630 if necessary.
